Graz, Austria was the first European city I took a weekend trip to upon arriving in London in October 2009. It was the biggest culture shock I’d experienced since leaving Australia due to the fact that NOTHING was in English, it was my first time being on the right hand side of the road and people kept trying to talk to me in German.
I took this photo at the base of the steps up the Schloßberg (which means “castle mountainâ€) in the centre of Graz. At the top is the “Uhrturm†(clock tower), and is one of the last remaining parts of the castle that was demolished by Napoleonic forces in 1809.
